Barbara Wiedemann, professor emerita of English and the former Director of Creative Writing at Auburn University Montgomery, is the author of a critical study, Josephine Herbst’s Short Fiction: A Window to Her Life and Times (Susquehanna University Press), and four chapbooks: Half-Life of Love (2008), Sometime in October (2010), Death of a Pope and Other Poems (2013), and Desert Meditations (2018), all published by Finishing Line Press. Her poetry has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Growing up in the Finger Lakes region of New York with no near neighbors, Wiedemann spent hours roaming the hills, experiences likely forming the basis for her life-long affinity to nature. In re-cent years, escaping the summer heat and humidity of Alabama, she travels to the mountains of the West where she camps in her van on public lands, her companion an energetic and often out-of-control blue heeler mix. She has hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, be-ginning at the Mexican border and ending five months later in Washington, and also the Colorado Trail, shorter but just as beautiful. There are days spent kayaking or mountain biking or watching the clouds move along the mountain tops. These experiences have served as catalysts for many of her poems.
