Penny Harter, co-author with her late husband William J. Higginson of The Haiku Handbook, is a past-president of the Haiku Society of America. Her work, both haiku-related and free verse, appears in numerous journals and anthologies. Among her many published books and chapbooks, six feature haiku and related genres.
Journals such as Persimmon Tree, Rattle, Tattoo Highway, Tiferet, and Windhover have published her work, and a poem of hers was featured in American Life in Poetry. Her newest collections of poems are A Prayer the Body Makes (2020) and Still-Water Days (2021), both from Kelsay Books. Other recent books include The Resonance Around Us (Mountains and Rivers Press); One Bowl (Snapshot Press); and Recycling Starlight (Mountains and Rivers Press).
A featured reader at the 2010 Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Festival, Harter has received three poetry fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Mary Carolyn Davies Award from the Poetry Society of America, a teaching-artist award from the Dodge Foundation, the William O. Douglas Nature Writing Award, and two residency fellowships from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
Some haiku-related journals and anthologies featuring her work include Haiku Moment; Journey to the Interior: American Versions of Haibun; Global Haiku; The Unswept Path; Modern Haibun and Tanka Prose; and Contemporary Haibun: Volume 12. Her exercise for poets, “Circling the Pine: Haibun and the Spiral Web” appears in Wingbeats: Exercises & Practice in Poetry (2011).
She has attended, and often presented at, every Haiku North America conference but the first one.
