Jane Chance is the Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Professor Emerita in English at Rice University and a recent recipient of an honorary doctorate of letters from Purdue University. Author of twenty-two books published by university and trade presses and over a hundred articles and reviews on medieval studies and medievalism, she has received Guggenheim and NEH Fellowships, membership in the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, a Rockefeller Foundation residency at Bellagio, and book and article prizes for her work on mythography, Medieval Mythography, volume 1: From Roman North Africa to the School of Chartres, AD 433–1177 (1994), and on medieval women, The Literary Subversions of Medieval Women (2007). Her edited collection Tolkien the Medievalist twice received runner-up for the best book prize by the Mythopoeic Society; she has also appeared in two documentary films about J.R.R. Tolkien. She has been invited to guest and plenary lectures at universities around the world and featured as a poet by various poetry groups in Houston.
