About the Author
Whitnee Coy is an award-winning writer and educator living in the Black Hills of South Dakota with her husband, Jesse, and their three kids. She was raised by her single mother and grandmother in Lexington, Kentucky, where she attended the School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA) for Creative Writing and the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts. Whitnee has her MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Kentucky University’s Bluegrass Writers Studio.
Three collections of her poetry are published, including this deep, wide, dark world (Alien Buddha Press). Her social-emotional learning children’s book series Elsie’s Adventures explores the neuroscience behind emotions and teaches coping skills for emotional regulation that can be done at home or in school.
A professor at Oglala Lakota College on the Pine Ridge Reservation, she also has her MA in Teacher Leadership with an emphasis in Secondary English and her Ed.D. in Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership, with an emphasis in Diversity and Equity, from the University of Illinois. When she isn’t working or writing, she loves doing stick-poke tattoos with her husband and going to coffee shops.
About the Artist
The cover art for We Left Constellations in Each Other was created by Jennifer White, a contemporary Arikara artist and the visionary behind Post Pilgrim Art Gallery. Jennifer’s work blends vibrant storytelling with Indigenous tradition, capturing movement, identity, and spirit. Her art holds space for layered memory—much like the poems in this collection.
