Phyllis Stowell was born in Wisconsin and raised outside of Chicago. As a teenager she went to Chicago to study art and go to the Symphony. She studied at Oberlin College, completing her BA at U W-Madison. In 1966 she moved to California, where she earned an MA in creative writing from SF State and a PhD in Poetry and Depth Psychology from the Union Institute. After teaching in numerous California Community Colleges, she became a professor at Saint Marys College of Moraga, CA, where she initiated an MFA program. Long retired, she continues to seek what will sustain self and soul through her writing. She has published two chapbooks; eight books of poetry; a collection of poetic essays: Transformations; and co-edited an anthology of poetry, Appetite. She lives in Berkeley, California with Ravi, her black Persian cat.
