Philip Theibert, at the age of ten, was batboy for Chapman College, where his father was the baseball coach. That year, Chapman went to the NCAA Baseball Tournament, and Mr. Theibert likes to think it was due to his extensive batboy skills. Theibert played baseball at Pomona College, and when no scouts came calling, decided on a writing career. He has published numerous books, including a book of baseball poems called Collisions at Home and a non-fiction book called Everything I Need to Know I Learned from Baseball. Theibert also coached summer ball for high school kids. He is still diligently working on his knuckleball, which an eight-year-old child seems to have no problem catching. But as Mr. Theibert is fond of saying, “Wait till next year.”
