David Anthony Sam, a proud grandson of immigrants from Poland and Syria, lives in Locust Grove, VA with his wife and life partner, Linda. They have two children, Michelle and Ryan, and three grandchildren.
A first-generation college student, he concluded a several decade career as a college administrator by becoming the fifth president at Germanna Community College (VA), from which he retired in 2017.
Sam has taught English literature and composition at two- and four-year institutions and currently teaches creative writing at Germanna Community College in Virginia.
His poetry has appeared in over 100 journals. Sam’s collection Writing the Significant Soil (Wayfarer Books, 2022) was awarded the 2021 Poetry Prize by Homebound Publications, the 2022 Poetry Prize by the Virginia Professional Communicators, and the Poetry Prize by the National Federation of Press Women. Seven other collections are in print including Stone Bird (San Francisco Bay Press, 2023) and Dark Fathers (Kelsay Books, 2019). He serves as Regional VP of the Poetry Society of Virginia.
