M. B. Powell’s poems have appeared in various journals, including Atlanta Review, Dappled Things, The Lyric, Peregrine, and Third Wednesday, and in the chapbook Lovers, Mothers, Killers, Others. The collection Two Neutron Stars Collide; or, Everyone’s Love Affair is forthcoming in 2019. Recognition of individual poems includes Atlanta Review’s International Poetry Contest Grand Prize (for “Phrases for Public Speakers at Sea”), the Princemere Poetry Prize (for “Slack Water”), and the Georgia Poetry Society’s Educators Award (for “One Mother’s Day”). Powell was a finalist in Dogwood’s Annual Poetry Contest (for “Split Couplet on Same”) and a runner-up for America Magazine’s Foley Poetry Award (for “Of the Tibetan Lion Dog”), and she received a “Best of the Net” nomination from Midway Journal (for “Helicon Cracking”). Powell studied literature at Agnes Scott College (B.A.), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (M.A.), and Columbia University (Ph.D.) and earned a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law. She has taught at Florida State University, Saint Martin’s University, and Pierce College and has published, as Marta Powell Harley, scholarly books, articles, and notes on medieval literature. Originally from Marietta, Georgia, she now lives in Union, Washington.
