"I was born in India in 1945. I lived as a small child in north London and as a slightly larger child in Edinburgh where I went to the Royal High School. Rather to my surprise, I got in to Oxford University and later lived in London and in Canterbury teaching a variety of things. I am married to Doreen Roberts, and we have two daughters, Ellie and Katie, and two cats.
But that is not really the point, is it? Why do I write? Why do I write poetry. Because I can’t write anything else. I have tried writing novels but it didn’t work out. What kind of poems. This kind. The kind you find here. Poems that rhyme and scan. Old fashioned poems. I have tried to write other kinds, but like the novels it didn’t work out." John Whitworth
