Mary Makofske was born and grew up in Washington, D.C. She attended Douglass College of Rutgers University (B.A.) and the University of Minnesota (M.A.). She has worked as a travel agent, local reporter, sexuality educator, and teacher, most recently at SUNY Orange Community College, where she was a professor of English. She retired in 2006.

Her poetry and prose have appeared on Poetry Daily and in 60 journals, including Poetry, Poetry East, Mississippi Review, Asheville Poetry Review, North American Review, Calyx, Louisville Review, and in 20 anthologies. She recently received the Malovrh-Fenlon Poetry Prize from the journal Quiet Diamonds.

She lives in the Hudson Valley of New York in a solar home she and her husband designed, where they tend a large garden. She delights in her two sons, two daughters-in-law, and four grandsons. In addition to writing, she is active in environmental and political organizations.
