Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, William Hengst has lived most of his adult life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In mid-life he changed careers from city planning to gardening, free-lance journalism, and creative writing, which he has continued to pursue since. He writes both short stories and poetry. One of his stories received an honorable mention award in 2011 from Glimmer Train magazine. His chapbook, Yard Man, published by Finishing Line Press in 2010, is a collection of poems inspired by his gardening life.
