Shaun T. Griffin has dedicated his life to creating a caring community. In 1991, he and his wife, Deborah, founded Community Chest, a nonprofit organization that directs more than thirty programs for northern Nevada including hunger relief, service learning, emergency shelter, drug and alcohol counseling, early childhood education, and art and social justice projects. (He retired in 2017.) Throughout this time, he has taught a poetry workshop at Northern Nevada Correctional Center and published a journal of their work, Razor Wire. Because the Light Will Not Forgive Me—Essays from a Poet, was published by the University of Nevada Press in 2019. Southern Utah University Press released Anthem for a Burnished Land, a memoir, in 2016.  He edited From Sorrow’s Well—The Poetry of Hayden Carruth, published by the University of Michigan Press in 2013. This Is What the Desert Surrenders, New and Selected Poems, came out from Black Rock Press in 2012. In 2014 he was inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame, and in 2006, he received the Rosemary MacMillan Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. For over three decades, he and his wife have lived in Virginia City in the shadow of novelist, Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s, former house.
