Mary Mallek Haines, a writer of Polish ancestry and author of the poetry collection Beads of an Abacus (San Francisco Bay Press, 2011), was raised in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She has an M.A. in English from the University of South Florida, where she taught as an adjunct. As a military wife she lived in Germany and in Japan, as well as several U.S. states, before settling in Williamsburg, Virginia, with her husband Charles. Since then, she has devoted much of her time to poetry related activities. For five years she hosted monthly poetry readings at a local coffeehouse, and she served as vicepresident of the eastern region of the Poetry Society of Virginia. She also initiated a poetry class, “Poetry: Writing Your Story,” for female inmates at the county jail. As a Virginia Master Naturalist, her favorite interests are observing and photographing birds, butterflies, and nature’s endless surprises.
